WASHINGTON — Members of Congress today reintroduced the Freedom to Vote Act, a far-reaching federal bill that would strengthen American democracy and thwart the assault on voting rights taking place in the states.

This legislation would set strong national standards for early and mail voting, automatic and same-day voter registration, protections for voters with disabilities, fair districting, rights restoration for people with prior felony convictions, and safeguards against partisan interference with local election administration.

At the same time, the American Civil Liberties Union is concerned about parts of the bill, most particularly the DISCLOSE Act provision, which could have unintended consequences on the constitutionally protected speech and associational rights of many public interest organizations and individuals across the nation.

The following comment is from ACLU National Political Director Deirdre Schifeling:

“Reintroduction of the Freedom to Vote Act is an important next step toward Congress strengthening and expanding participation in our democracy. We applaud the sponsors for their work on the bill — and we look forward to working with Congress to continue to improve this legislation, to reintroduce the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, and to pass and send legislation to the president’s desk.

“Communities across the country have been sounding the alarm as they face unprecedented attacks on their right to vote. Congress has an obligation to act urgently to protect our democracy. We won’t stop fighting until every eligible voter can access the ballot and have their vote counted.”
